Being Single: Learning to Embrace Yourself

Being single isn’t some ominous period of your life, and it doesn't have to be a mad scramble to get into a relationship. The truth is that being single is actually an opportunity to focus on yourself, your needs, your desires, and most importantly, your worth. It’s how people learn about themselves and how to appreciate who they are. It’s true that being in a relationship is a rewarding experience for most, but being single can be too!

Denver Therapy and Self Care

There are lots of ways we can work to improve our mental health without relying on a romantic partner. That way, when we are ready to share our lives with another, we can do so knowing our needs and self worth. Start by focusing on your self worth, your needs in life, and from future relationships.

Know Your Worth

For some, it’s easier said than done. Sometimes, it can be difficult to pull ourselves out of the harmful routines and mindsets that bring us down. But appreciating, loving, and caring for ourselves not only improves our mental health, it lends itself to a better understanding of who we are and what we need out of life and love.

  • Self Acceptance - Acknowledging our imperfections and learning to embrace what makes us unique is the first step in improving our mental health. Try to think about yourself without judging the things you cannot change, whether they involve your past, your body, or some other facet of your being. Invest in the idea that you are who you are in this present moment, and the parts of you that you want to change, you can work to change at any time. There’s no pressure to seek that change at this time or at all, and if/when you do seek that change, you should do so because it’s what you want to do.

  • Self Care - Self care is about doing things that make us feel mentally and physically relaxed and rejuvenated. It’s different for everyone, but it usually means putting down work and setting aside stressful environments in order to focus on the things that make us happy. For some, this looks like a long bath and a good book, while others may go for a hike to soak in the sun and outdoors. Whatever you do, make it sure it boosts your energy and makes you feel good!

  • Self Pleasure - Exploring pleasure on our own, in a private, safe space, is an essential part of acknowledging our self worth and taking ownership of our own bodies. Embracing sex-positivity, especially toward ourselves, can be a lifechanging practice, and it opens the door to greater acceptance of who we are as sexual beings with needs and desires. Masturbation is a natural form of self care that allows us to get to know our bodies, our pleasure zones, and most importantly, how we want to be touched by others.
