Roleplaying Tips & Ideas to Try With Your Partner

While some Halloween gatherings may be limited due to COVID-19, you can still get some extra use out of your costume by wearing them for some fun in the bedroom. Roleplay is a great way to step out of your own skin and into someone else’s, giving both you and your partner newfound appreciation for your romantic and sexual encounters. Even though Halloween is the perfect time to try roleplay with your partner, it’s a fun change of pace you can bring into your sex life at any time.

Talk to your partner about roleplay, discuss each of your fantasies and the roles you would each like to play, and try out some of the tips and tricks below!

Create a Judgement-Free Zone

Sex of any kind creates vulnerabilities in people, and it’s important for each partner to be able to explore their fantasies without the risk of judgement. Come to the agreement with your partner that the bedroom is a judgement-free zone, where all fantasies are valid so long as they are consensual. Respect your partner’s kinky side, and trust them to respect your own.

Realize There is No Right Way to Start

There are no right or wrong answers when it comes to picking roles with your partner. The Cheerleader and Football Star fantasy might be just as satisfying as the Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein fantasy. But remember that not all roleplaying has to include props and costumes. Go out to a bar and try picking each other up as if you were strangers, recreate a scene from your favorite movie or adult video, or retrace the intimacy of your wedding night.

Use Your Imagination!

It may seem obvious, but it can be hard to trick your mind into believing the roles you and your partner are playing out. Creating a perfect departure from reality isn’t the goal, but teasing your mind and that of your partner definitely is. Do your best to get into your role, change your voice, say things you might not normally say, and approach sex the way you think your character might. The more you surprise your partner with new mannerisms, the more you’ll trick their brain, and the more rewarding your roleplay experience will be.

Communicate Throughout & Debrief After

It may not always be possible to become fully immersed in your role or that of your partner. If anything feels uncomfortable during your play, remember that it’s still okay to say so, and you should say so with your normal voice to indicate to your partner that you are no longer playing a role. Playing out fantasies can make us feel, do, and say things our partners may not have experienced before, and sometimes there are boundaries we don’t even know exist until they are tested. Throughout and after your play, talk to your partner about what you like, what you don’t, and what you might want to do differently.
